(ORANGE, CALIFORNIA)태어났다
하지만, 오클라호마, 텍사스, 애리조나 콜로라도에서
그녀의 어린 시절을 보냈다.
그녀는 11 세에 학교를 중퇴하고
나이트 클럽에서 전문적으로 노래를하기 시작했다.

그녀는 15 세에 결혼을하고 , 네 아이를 낳았다.
1967년 이혼후 오클라호마 레코딩 스튜디오의 소유자인
후원자인 작곡가 진 설리반의 도움으로
1967 년 내쉬빌로 이사 그녀가 24 살 때
자니 캐쉬는 그녀의 재능을 인정,
함께 컬럼비아 레코드에 계약을 체결
1968 타이틀곡 "So Long, Charlie Brown,
Don't Look for Me Around". 발매 첫 히트
